Since 1977, we have been growing for Market at our Brush Valley Farm, 5 miles east of Centre
Hall on Route 192. Our farm is around 4 acres, with 4 greenhouse/high tunnels in which we grow tomatoes, cantaloupe,
peppers and cucumbers. Our specialty is growing these crops in the protected environment of these structures so we can
produce very early crops.
To grow these crops, we rely on a mix of organic and conventional agricultural practices.
For example, we use predatory insects to eat and destroy the harmful insects; organically approved beneficial soil organisms
to combat disease and fungus; cover crops, mulches and crop rotation to build soil health. However, we also use commercial
fertilizers and apply them according to careful soil tests to supply nutrients to the plants and if needed pesticides on a
limited scale. Chuck is licensed and is trained annually by the Pa. Dept. of Agriculture to use pesticides safely and effectively.
We also grow pumpkins, peppers, beans, lettuce, onions, garlic, squash, eggplant, and other
vegetables in our fields. In addition, we grow a large selection of flowers that we make into gorgeous bouquets, as well as
6000 gladiolus and 2 acres of floral sunflowers that are sold by the stem.
